Receiving Food Assistance

Due to the immense increase in people requiring food assistance, we have had to change how we provide food packages to food insecure people.

To be fair we were having extreme difficulty maintaining, sustaining, and supplying food to those in need.

Last year (01 April 2024 to 31 March 2025) we provided 15,759 food packages ( an increase of 277.46%, up on the previous year), feeding 31,553 people.

Hence the need for change.

There are 4 or more similar type food banks, pataka, including Fresh Start 20/20 Inc.

All require membership (ie. People who sit on your boards, trusts and/or committees, who are representatives of organization within the Te Hiku / Muriwhenua / Far North communities).

We distribute surplus goods (E.g. 3 tons of kumara, potatoes, carrots, avocados, apples and confectionary etc), out through 18 organisations within the Kaitaia and wider Far North Rural Communities. This is a more cost effective way to reach food insecure whanau / households.

Due to funding cutbacks and a change in priorities and outcomes, we are having to source alternative avenues and forge long-term relationships to access food and produce.
